issues likey to be at the forefront.military-style assault weapons, high capacity ammunition clips, and loopholes to get around background checks. the president said he will make very specific proposals once he gets the recommendations next month. on friday.the n- r-a will talk for the first time since the elementary school shooting. return to index of stories... california has some of the toughest gun laws in the nation - but some state lawmakers are looking to make them even stronger. as kron four's terisa estacio reports, one lawmaker says, there is still a lot of work to be done. on the heels of the horrific shooting in newtown connecticut, several california law makers are saying enough is enough. it is time to put into place more restrictions on guns. specifically assault weapons like the ones used by the shooter adam lanza. leland lee is one of those pushing for new proposals in sacramento. >> this is a time we should all be reflecting. loopholes. and he is not alone. state senator ted gaines is calling for legislation that would prevent persons with court documented mental health issues from obtaining a firearm. >> and yee adds another state senator is looking at a proposal that put the bushmaster a-r - 15 style rifle. one of the guns the shooter used in the new town school massacre, is one of the most popular weapon's in the country. three- million americans currently have this gun in their homes. kron 4's reggie kumar is here in the studio. to show us how easy it is to purchase the rifle on-line. reggie? pam. it was difficult to find assault rifles like the ar 15 for sale online in the bay area through a private owner. but, i did find one for sale in california on craigslist a private owner located in bakersfield is selling this ar-15 rifle for 900 dollars. the craigslist ad says motivated to sell but willing to trade. i found another ar-15 rifle for sale through a private owner on craigslist in las vegas.the ad says the price is 11 hundred dollars without the optics part, or 17 hundred dollars for everything. some gun ethusiasts also posted ads like this on craigslist asking to purchase a semi

automatic rifle, willing to pay up to thousand dollars. people can also go to gunbroker dot com. type in the type of gun you're looking for. the website does have a brand new ar-15 for sale that people can bid on. the current bid is at more than 36 hundred dollars. in the bold print at the bottom of the website, it says the buyer "may" only ship the gun to a licensed gun dealer, so they can transfer it to the buyer. i only found ar-15 rifle magazines, clips and parts for sale on craigslist here in the bay area. i also searched ebay and amazon, but. didn't find assault rifles for sale on those websites, just ar-15 rifle literature and parts. pam. and ahead in a few minutes. more on the gun control issue. a professor at u-c berkeley shares his thoughts index of stories... ahead at eight. the citizens of richmond weigh in on plans to repair the chevron oil refinery which caught fire back in august. hazmat crews respond to a post office in oakland. what sickened several employees? and the fiscal cliff inching ever closer. the latest on the negotiations between president obama and house speaker, john boehner. developing tonight. the fallout from the september attack on americans in benghazi that killed four people.including bay area native.ambassador chris stevens. tonight four state department officials have resigned under pressure.because of their roles in the deadly incident. a report released today was critical of state department leadership.sating security for the americans in benghazi was quote "inadequate." the school massacre in connecticut has raised all sorts of questions about gun control laws and what should and should not be imposed. today we spoke with the author of numerous gun control books to get his take on the issue. kron 4's j.r. stone has more on what he said. and what we may soon see. pam one other issue that zimring talked about is the federal assault weapon ban that was in place from 1994 to 2004 but he doesn't think that we will see that reimposed. why is that? so does he think that brady bill reform will pass? several postal service employees are recovering tonight. after being exposed to pepper spray at a post office in oakland this morning. firefighters and hazmat crews from the oakland fire department were called to the office at macarther and high street. shortly after 10- this morning. they say at least seven employees began experiencing coughing and eye irritation. return to index of stories... most of the affected employees were treated at the scene. one was taken to a nearby hospital. no packages were involved in the incident. the nation is now only two weeks away from the fiscal cliff. the president is saying he

and house speaker john boehner. are "pretty close" to a deal. but as kron-4's catherine heenan reports. there is also talk of a plan "b" - and lots of public squabbling. return to index of stories... the president is telling congressional republicans to get back to the bargaining table. saying the two sides are far too close to a deal to give up now. meantime - house speaker john boehner and other gop leaders are frantically trying to gather support for a fallback plan -- "plan b". it would extend bush-era tax cuts for everyone earning less than one million dollars a year. both sides sound frustrated. both sides - blaming the other for the 11th hour chaos. in response.boehner held a news conference that lasted one minute. with that - he walked off. republicans have scheduled a vote on 'plan b' - for thursday. it would head off most of the tax increases. there has been some movement this week. the president has offered house republicans a plan that would raise taxes on americans earning more than $400-thousand dollars.up from 200- thousand. he says 'take the deal.' the clock is ticking toward december 31st - with boehner saying he has not giving up on talks with the president. and at least one lawmaker is trying to sound optimistic. "darkest before the dawn. more like than not" mr. boehner may not have all the votes he needs to move his 'plan b' through the house. and the white house says , mr. obama would veto the measure anyway. we'll be right back.

>>pam: now for a look at our top stories at eight-thirty. a gunman opens fire on a south bay freeway. this was the scene from sky-7 h-d, abc-7 news. police briefly shut the road down, as they searched for evidence this afternoon. the car of a military recruiter was hit four times -- he was *not injured. no word on any arrests. >> the debate over gun control - reaching a tipping point, following a deadly elementary school shooting. today - president barrack obama promised "meaningful action". we now know vice president joe biden will lead a task force that will present a set of gun control recommendations to the president. in newtown

connecticut - >> more victims of the school massacre laid to rest. this is video from a vigil, held in a neighboring town today. 27 people were killed in the elementary school shooting -- including the gunman last week. 20 of the those murdered were children. police tonight still searching for a possible motive in the tragedy. >> new tonight, the citizens of richmond voice their concerns about repair work planned at the damaged chevron refinery. back on august 6th, a massive fire at the refinery sent a huge column of black smoke into the skies over the east bay. now, chevron wants to repair the damage but it need permits from the city before work can be completed. kron 4's charles clifford has details. >>reporter: in the weeks following the august 6th refinery fire chevron put together a report to repair.

firefighters discover a body after putting out a fire in a carport in campbell this morning. the fire was reported at about 1-15 this morning near an apartment building on kuehnis drive. investigators say the death does not appear to be suspicious. and say the person who was found may have been sleeping in the carport. how the fire investigation. >>pam: an aspiring marine jesus ruiz diego, was freed by immigration and customs enforcement today after being held by immigration ruiz diego grew up in san jose since he was four years old-- but didn't find out until a few years ago that he was not a legal citizen. after officials caught up with jesus at his workplace. proceedings. but thanks to efforts that included a rally in front of the ice office last month, and a petition with 5,000 signatures, he was set free. in my is one to say thank you, for everybody that signed the petition and made this possible for me to get released. i want to thank everybody for the support. >>pam: ruiz diego tells us how thankful he is to be released. ice spokeswoman said ruiz diego was released under the agency's intensive supervision program--- pending a future hearing before an immigration judge. however, despite this positive step, ruiz diego still faces deportation from the country he has called home since he was four years old. >> the city of san jose will be getting fluoride in its drinking water. san jose is
